Originally a division of the kingdom of Mercia, the first recorded reference to Warwickshire was in 1001 as Wæringscīr (later Warwick and meaning dwellings by the weir). During the Middle Ages the county was dominated by Coventry (now part of the West Midlands) which, at the time was one of England’s most important cities.
Warwickshire is jam-packed with family-friendly attractions. Many of the county’s historic attractions have child-friendly exhibits to help bring history alive for the younger generation. There are also a large number of outdoor play facilities, nature trails and farm parks to explore. Theme parks including Drayton Manor Park, West Midland Safari Park, Thomas Land, Twycross Zoo and Hatton Adventure World provide great fun for the whole family.
