Historic Warwickshire

Originally a division of the kingdom of Mercia, the first recorded reference to Warwickshire was in 1001 as ‘Wæringscīr’ (later ‘Warwick’ and meaning ‘dwellings by the weir’). During the Middle Ages the county was dominated by Coventry (now part of the West Midlands) which, at the time was one of England’s most important cities. Warwickshire has a huge number of historic buildings and stately homes, many of which have been lovingly preserved for the benefit of future generations. Please see our ‘Discover’ pages for more information.
