Alcester Walk Route

This easy seven-mile circular Warwickshire walk combines the delights of both town and country taking in the historic Roman town of Alcester together with some lovely riverside paths, country lanes, and gentle farmland. It is mostly flat and very dog friendly. There is also the chance to visit Coughton Court, a very attractive National Trust property. The first part of the walk incorporates a short section of the Millennium Way, where you will be guided by the distinctive black Millennium Way waymarkers.

The Start (A)

Our walk starts at the Throckmorton Arms at Coughton, just north of Alcester on the A435. With your back to the front entrance of the pub, go Right down the main A435 continuing past Coughton Lodge. From here you will have a nice view of Coughton Court over to your left. You are now on the Millennium Way.

Go past Sambourne Lane then turn Right down Coughton Lane just past the post box. Stay along Coughton Lane for just under a mile and at the T junction turn Right on the B4090. Go approx 30 paces then go Left through the hedge gap along the marked bridleway where you will see a black Millennium Way waymarker.

Go with hedge Left and where the hedge finishes ( ignore footbridge to the right ) go 1/4 Left to the waypost to turn Left into next field and continue along with hedge Left. ( Here we have left the Millennium Way.)

The Ford (B)

You will eventually cross a small ford into a large field. Go 1/2 R and continue forward keeping a wide ditch on your R. (Depending on the time of year, there may be a small brook running in the ditch, known as Spittle Brook.) Continue with ditch R crossing dip in corner of field into next field, again to continue with a wide ditch on R and Cold comfort Wood 200 yards on far R. Pass through a hedge gap and stay on the same line with ditch R.

At the end of the field where you arrive at a hedge directly ahead, turn R along the track for a few yards to find the corner waypost. Here we turn L to join The Monarch’s Way and stay along with hedge and trees L. The ditch and small brook are now on your L. Stay along the partly surfaced track to reach a T – junction. Here you will see Coldcomfort Farm on the far R. Go L at this T – junction walking away from the farm past the bench on the L and continue along the lane towards the main road.

Go past Allimore house on your L and just before meeting the main road take the incline on R to reach and then cross the bridge over the main road.

Finally (F)

Go L on lane passing Millford Cottage and then Millford House. After a few yards take the waymarked footpath L. Here we take a metal bridge across the River Arrow and through a metal gate into a large field. Continue ahead across the field towards the farm buildings in the far distance and take a metal kissing gate to the next field. Go 1/2 R to exit this field via a metal gate to the lane.

Cross over lane into Coughton Court entrance, pass by St. Peter’s Catholic Church on R, and just before the main Coughton Court building take the bridge L and then R through the pedestrian gate just by the cattle grid. Continue forward through a metal kissing gate and stay ahead towards the main road. Here you can enjoy an unfettered view of the lovely Coughton Court behind you. Exit to the main A435 road via a kissing gate and turn R to eventually arrive back at the Throckmorton Arms. (Should the entrance to Coughton Court be closed, you can as an alternative route take the lane down to the main road instead of taking the route through the grounds, and then go R along the A435 to arrive back at the pub.

We hope you enjoyed this walk!
