Apple Day & Country Fair at Hill Close Gardens
October 16, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Since 1856, apples, pears and plums are known to have been grown in these historic gardens as well as soft fruit. Now, there are more than 60 different varieties flourishing thanks to the fantastic volunteers of the Hill Close Gardens Trust who started a programme of clearing and restoring these trees to bring them back to growth and fruit bearing.
A well-loved annual fixture on the Warwick garden’s calendar is the Apple Day & Country Fair, which celebrates the wonderful varieties of apples cultivated at Hill Close. Enjoy a leisurely day of good company and browse a number of craft and food stalls, from tasty cheeses to wood carving displays. Delight at the display of the different historic varieties of apples grown and have a go at competitions to ‘Guess the Weight’ or create the ‘Longest Apple Peel’.
A selection of Victorian tools will be displayed along with some finds from the gardens spanning its 174 year history. The café will be open serving refreshments and there will also be plant, apple and gift sales.
The hidden hedged gardens of Warwick’s Hill Close Gardens are rare survivals of Victorian gardens once used by townsfolk living above their business to escape from the crowded town. Discover how owners came here after work or on Sundays to tend their plots or to relax.
